 SisterShip Out of Dry Docks

Life on the water is never static.  Mother nature makes sure of that!  Even at anchor things are
constantly changing; the view as the boat swings, the light on the waves, the sound in the rigging,
other vessels arriving or leaving.

No two sunsets or rises are the same.  And so it is at SisterShip.

Two years ago Jackie and I set out to bring SisterShip Magazine out of drydock and, after a huge
amount of work, we did just that, relaunching the magazine in April of last year.  As often happens on
long journeys, we discovered our passions and talents growing and diverging.  As an experienced
sailor and enthusiastic maritime teacher, Jackie’s heart is in teaching, and helping others bring their
cruising dreams to reality.  My love of the marine environment is unwavering but a growing interest
in creative pursuits, and empowering women through community, has me wanting to continue to
follow our current course. The obvious choice was to buddy-boat, each at the helm of a SisterShip
vessel and crewing for each other when needed.

Alone at the helm of the magazine, it occurred to me that what began two years ago as two women
on a journey has actually become a community – the essence of what Ruth Boydell wanted all those
years ago when she first launched SisterShip magazine in 1988.  And while I might be at the helm, I’m
not really alone.  I’m just one member of the passionate crew that keep this vessel afloat - our
contributors and readers.

This is exactly what SisterShip should be, and was always meant to be; a community.

Don’t worry, Jackie hasn’t walked the plank or fallen overboard!  She will still be appearing regularly
within the pages of the magazine and you can find her at the helm of the SisterShip Training
webpage.

Which brings me to the latest change along the SisterShip voyage, the ‘splash’ of the new SisterShip
Magazine webpage after a haul-out and antifoul.  Many thanks to fellow woman on the water
Raylene Symons for undertaking this task.

You can read about our community of contributors on the About Us’ page and there are more to come!

The sails are now unfurled as the SisterShip community hits the water once again.

Hope you can join us!

I’m captivated by stories of women crossing oceans, especially those who undertook voyages decades before all the wonderful technology we have at our fingertips today. How many of us would head off without that technology I wonder? Even with all our modern gadgets, crossing an ocean solo is a daunting thought. The following are some of the books on my shelf written by trail blazing, solo sailing women from the 1970s and onwards...
